About me

IF the internet is a vast, interconnected highway then you must have taken a wrong turn.

My name’s Dan. I’m a working journalist in the Masterton, New Zealand.

In May 2010 I graduated from Whitireia Community Polytechnic’s Diploma in Journalism (Multimedia) in Wellington. A course coordinated by veteran hack Jim Tucker who taught old school reporting infused with digital skills to meet the changing face of journalism.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Media Studies from Victoria University of Wellington in 2008. A love for great writing and an analytical background to media that continues to inform my day-to-day work as a daily newspaper journalist.

My work is scattered across print and online.  You can find much of my print work on the Wairarapa Times-Age website, although admittedly the omission of photos and fact boxes don’t do their ink counterparts justice.

You can also read stores I produced as a journalism student on Whitireia Polytechnic’s journalism website NewsWire.co.nz. These range from Wellington City Council politics, to parliament, to an investigation on the changing landscape of NZ’s magazine industry.

Several of my stories are available on Stuff.co.nz as freelance work and internship work for The Wellingtonian (2010 Qantas award winner for best community newspaper).

My ambition is to learn everything I can from anyone I can, see a lot of the world, and break stories that help people get the justice they deserve.

I’m a busy man so this blog will languish, but I will endeavour to update it from time to time.

Got feedback? Got a story? You can contact me at daniel.simmons-ritchieNOSPAM@newswire.co.nz. Remove the NOSPAM.
